Weekend routines

Friday nights in New Orleans were almost always with family (every other with extended family) ... a dinner out or take-out dinner and catching up with everyone at someone else's house. We usually stayed as late as the kids could be reasonable and bearable. We looked forward to Friday nights with family. It energized us for the rest of the weekend.

Friday nights in Little Rock are almost always just us ... an easy home-cooked meal and a kids movie to help keep the kids up a bit later than their normal bedtime of 7:30pm in a measly effort of getting a little sleep-in time the following morning. Sam even begged to go to bed last night at 9pm because he was so tired. While we used to stay up late, Doug is often in bed before 10:30 in an effort to be ready to run in the morning with the LR Running Club that meets at 5:30/6am. Since we're home, I tend to catch up on laundry and finish cleaning so that I can be "done" too for the week. We now look forward to Friday nights because it signals the end of school/work week and a chance to relax from the schedule that drives us.

The rest of the weekend is different too ... Saturdays (when Doug is not travelling) are leisurely. No youth activities or church obligations to fill our time. It's truly a play/catch up day and helps us prepare for Sunday as a day of rest (and football) before we start the week again. We do find ourselves a bit bored sometimes on Sundays ... especially Sunday nights when we'd be with the youth (in the past) while the boys would be with the other kids at church.

Gettin' used to the new routine here ... all to change again in seven months. Wink.

With This Ring

Here's another idea to give radically this Christmas .... check out the link to the "radical givers" page on this website. And there's a short video on the Media page, too, as well as an excellent longer video explaining this ministry's birth. Powerful! If you saw Blood Diamond and felt the need to do something, then maybe this is it. Honestly, I'm still mulling this one over in my head. It's no accident that I haven't worn my diamond in months because one of the prongs are bent and I'm scared to lose the diamond out of its setting. This will be the second time I've had to get the prongs straightened. Need to get on my knees about this one (oh, and talk to Doug).

Random catching-up

I'm pretty stoked about the cloth diaper thing. The baby stage is not my favorite so it's a little motivation that something will be new and different besides the personality of Boy 3. Thanks for all your comments ... it's fun to hear of everyone's experiences.

My OB measured me at 29 weeks on Monday, which is about a week ahead of my due date. I'm still feeling pretty good, but back to napping with the boys in the afternoons to maintain my sanity. Sometimes I smile at how fun pregnancy was the first time around ... now it's just not that exciting. I'm most nervous about not getting to the hospital quick enough since all that part goes pretty quickly for me usually. Maybe Doug should read up on home delivery. ;)

I'm pretty sad about so many friends moving from New Orleans in the coming months. I'm ready to find those friends who I can raise my kids with and friends that the boys can enjoy for more than just a couple years at a time. And, yeah, it makes me want to move, but that wouldn't change anything. And, yeah, it's frustrating that New Orleans itself is so transient (lots of military families, people scared to raise their kids here, etc.). I love the uniqueness of this culture but that part has been a real downer lately.

I've spent lots of time thinking, researching about preschool/pre-K/kindergarten and all that in the last couple weeks. We'll see how it all shakes out. It would be nice to send the eldest for half-day something in the fall, as it would be good for him and Zach to do something separate. But, I'd enjoy having him home with us for another year too since he won't start K until fall 09.

We had a fun weekend away in Sugar Land, Texas this past weekend. The real purpose of the trip was to chaperone students as they attended Planet Wisdom. The whole group of us stayed at a former church member's home (moved since K), so the boys and I went along for fun. I didn't attend the conference, but those that did enjoyed it a lot. The boys loved being at the Fasullos' home and around the youth. We stayed healthy except for Doug losing his voice along the way. ;)

We saw the Pirates movie today since it was Doug's day off. Sam loved it and said nothing scared him in spite of him getting on his knees and peeking through the seats in front of us at times. As soon as we mention the movie, Zach will remind us that he was scared of the rocks and the cheetos. I think we all enjoyed it though.

The turn signal on the van is driving me crazy! We spent some $ getting it fixed before the trip, only to find out that it didn't work at all. Since we've had it for a year, it's been temperamental and only works randomly and at its own will. You'd think it was a loose connection or maybe weather-related, but I think it's just there to aggravate me at this point. Thankfully, it makes me drive a little more defensively (most of the time) and I haven't taken a hammer to it yet. ;)

I finished reading Dee Henderson's O'Malley series since the 1st of the year. Read the final book in the YYPG series. AND, read all three of the Annie's People series by Beverly Lewis. Not sure why I'm so drawn to fiction lately, but it's all I can do to do anything else. Maybe it's the "cold" weather or just a way to deal with the funk I've felt lately.

I'm still enjoying the dozen of pink roses I bought on 1/10 to honor our little girl who's not part of our family here. That day and the day before were filled with memories of the previous year and the emotions it brought. God is still good and life here still hurts.

Amazing coorelation

Recently, Doug and I rented We are Marshall, a story about the rebuilding of Marshall University's football program after a plane crash took the lives of 75 players, coaches, and fans in 1970. We were surprised to be challenged in our own response to our "crash" of 8/05 and identified with the characters' emotions as they dealt with loss and moving forward. Doug particularly felt similarly to that of a remaining football player whose life was spared by missing the plane because of an injury. I challenge every New Orleanian (or those who seek to understand our community's feelings) to watch it, mindful of Katrina and our current condition. I don't doubt that you'll find it as inspiring and therapeutic as we did.
